Side note, but usually when fixed-camera tank-control games have a “modern controls” option, it also seems to turn faster? Like it’s just straight-up more powerful regardless of familiarity (apart from maybe the inability to walk backwards)

I just want controls to be less standardized in general, whether they be less “empowering” than the current standard (e.g. tank controls), or more (gyro aiming, theoretically mind-controlled games)

Like if tilting the stick in a direction in front of the character turns in that direction at a fixed rate, walking forward when the angle gets low enough. While tilting in a direction behind them walks backward with the same logic.

Though for games where the camera isn’t locked to your back, I kinda get it more. I think you could have the strengths and weaknesses of tank controls there without the “clunk” of forward on the stick not moving forward on the screen

Getting into RE4’s movement took like two minutes, and that was pretty much my first tank controls game after being thoroughly used to contemporary controls. Is that too much to ask of players?

Yeah, I thought the build-a-hard-mode in Freedom Planet 2 was cool, but I admit I probably made the easiest hard mode possible. It was still fun and tense though

I notice that “beat-em-up” is often just used to mean “very basic combat” like in Batman Arkham. Maybe the genre name itself is making people underestimate it?
