Journalist. Contributing Ed at Scientific American. Senior Fellow at Emory Univ's Center for the Study of Human Health. Books: BIG CHICKEN, SUPERBUG, BEATING BACK THE DEVIL. All my stories at https://authory.com/marynmckenna. No more diets only riots.
The Medill/NWU grad program had a boot-camp pre-quarter for people they admitted who had not had academic journalism before (hello, English lit major). Any AP style error was an automatic F. The prof (ex-Chicago Daily News when it existed) tormented us with whether McDonald's contains an apostrophe.

My version of this is the last long-term survivors of the early years of HIV.
The first cases were described in 1981 and the first good drugs didn't arrive til 1996. So the youngest people who survived the early years are into their 60s now.
Those first-person accounts are so crucial.

What a lovely man he was. Generous, humble, incredibly kind.

There must have been a rubric. There's no way this fulfilled the rubric. So the uni just blows up its grading process once challenged? Good intel for every other student, I guess.

The Irish are still low-key mad about the Battle of Clontarf.
That was in 1041.
Nourish your grudges, they are fuel for the soul.

(Low-key because the Irish won, technically, but the Vikings killed the high king and most of the leadership and how dare.)

In my own work (public health history) I caught up with several people in the last years of their lives. By the time there was a book out of it, they had left us. Moral (true also in this theatre example, which I adore): If you have identified people, do not wait.

Haha it’s true. I only went to j-school because I couldn’t make theatre pay the bills.

Funny how it’s the Scottish play is traditionally considered bad luck and not the one with all the stabbing.

Most things we do with knives dull them eventually. This is why sharpeners exist.
