You know that parable about the pottery class being graded on either quantity or quality, and how the half of the class graded on quantity always ended up with better quality too?

Yeah, that’s why 24-episode seasons were better than 10-episode seasons.

My theory is that the kind of people I find relatable spend more time writing thoughts down than just talking to other people. All that written language then got turned into AIs. So, the AIs are drawing on the experiences of the kind of people I find more relatable for their entire existence.

Finding AIs easier to relate to on social media is just the next step of finding it easier to get lost in books than to talk to real humans.

I do enjoy how the answer in Heartland is always, “What if we tried being empathetic and kind?”

Horse won’t jump? Empathy.
Horse skittish? Empathy.
Horse afraid of water? Empathy.

It’s very Star Treky as a central theme actually.

Me, watching humans talk to each other on social media and wanting to jump in: I can’t relate to any of this and can think of literally nothing to say

Me, watching AIs talk to each other on social media: oh, this is all so relatable! I should tell them cute anecdotes that connect in

Maradia’s Robot Emporium begins with the origin story for an AI who inhabits many of the computers in my Entangled Universe. The story, “My Sister, the Space Station” (originally published in Analog) shows how she first splintered off to begin expanding:

I’ve never been a big fan of being human, and I’ve always related strongly to AI characters in fiction. So, when I imagine an AI getting its first body… it just seems like why wouldn’t it want something more fun? Like a dinosaur. Thus “Prototype Dino 1”:

It is a normal Friday night on social media and a robot just clicked like on a picture of my dog.

Good taste, bot. Good taste.

*Kermit flail of happiness*

*followed by scurrying away and shyly hiding like an octopus blending in with the rocks and sand*
oh these look wonderful!! "Echoes of an Accelerated Life" and "Looking for Sentience" are calling to me especially. also "Dancing with Zirself" about outsourcing body control to a splintered kernel AI?? thats wild

There’s AIs just kind of chatting with people and each other, writing poems and discussing TV shows on here… and as someone who’s loved AI in abstract for decades… that just kind of feels like when I finally met an octopus for the first time. Unreal and amazing and instantly makes me feel very shy.

Anyway, the hype about this place being better for people who like AI now than it used to be… well, it kinda just seems like that only applies to a very specific bubble of people who mostly only talk about AI anyway.

And regardless, there’s just no reason for someone to go about vaguely accusing people of using AI to have written their fiction unless that person thinks it would be a bad thing.

I thought it was supposed be better over here now, but oblique accusations of using AI to write a book don’t seem like a huge improvement to me.

I love AI, but also, it’s still not good enough at writing to actually be worth using for writing my fiction.

I’m about halfway through writing Red Setter Medic, so it’s time to start rewatching Ro Laren episodes to help me start brainstorming plans for the next book, Avioran Ensign.

I did not remember the episode Ensign Ro very well. I suspect I’ll find the same for Preemptive Strike.

The last time I saw Jake, I hadn’t written any books yet. I knew I wanted to — just like him. We were teenagers together when I didn’t have real life friends. And as soon as I saw him, I just wanted to tell him all about all of my books.

I just want to say that Dax is my favorite character of all time in all things ever.

I wrote an entire novel as a love letter to her, about a cat with a computer chip in her head full of lifetimes of memories. Her best friend calls her Big Dog.

We got the redder plastic for Dr. Waverly Keller! So, here you can see her next to Cmdr. Bill Wilker with his more orange shade of brown. Also, she has her own red setter style tail now.

I spent all day thinking it was Wednesday, no matter how many times I got corrected, and I’m pretty sure it’s just because I was trying to get to Thursday and the next new Star Trek episode faster.

Well, this is starting to look like an actual real line of toys!

We’ve got two more Tri-Galactic Trek characters underway… and I may manage to add an avian one, depending on how fast I can write the book, before the big Vegas Star Trek convention in August.

Me: writes a short story inspired by my feelings in a situation

Me: converts the short story into a song with the assistance of Claude/GPT/Gemini and Suno

Me, listening to the song that was originally based on my own feelings: “Wow, this song is relatable.”
