Lisle has a long bony Plantagenet face, and he is tall like his father King Edward, who no doubt had many bastards, but none so distinguished as this elderly man, bending his creaky knee in obeisance before Boleyn's daughter. His wife, Honor, his second wife, is twenty years his junior, small and delicate, a toy wife. She wears tawny silk, coral bracelets with gold hearts, and an expression of vigilant dissatisfaction, bordering on the peevish. She looks him up and down. "I suppose you are Cromwell?" If a man spoke to you in that tone, you'd invite him to step outside and ask someone to hold your coat.

I wish I understood linguistics words. Wtf is a voiced intervocalic plosive phoneme

In effect, the early Tamil Brähmi inscriptions show a letter system comparable to our own alphabet, rather than a syllabary; thus the other ' All-India' development of conjunct consonants for such sounds as ksa, tra, or ktva was rendered unnecessary. Mahadevan convincingly suggests that the absence of the (available) voiced plosive characters from this script means that Tamil at this stage did not have the voiced intervocalic plosive phonemes that are one of its principal modern features (though one still uncatered for in the script). 16

Apparently Ashvaghosha became a buddhist by challenging buddhists to debates and owning them until he accidentally let an old man take the position “the world should be good instead of bad” in a debate and had to become his pupil
However, in the north there was an elder bhiksu named Parsva at the time, who saw that if he could convert this ascetic, it would be a great asset to the propagation of the Dharma, so he travelled from northern India and had the wood- block sounded. The ascetic came to ask why it had been sounded. Though thinking the old monk would be unable to debate with him, he accepted the challenge. After seven days, the debate was held in front of the King, his Ministers, and many ascetics and brahmans. The loser agreed to become the disciple of the other. They agreed that the elder Parsva should speak first, and he said: "The world should be made peaceable, with a long-lived king, plentiful harvests, and joy throughout the land, with none of the myriad calamities", to which the ascetic had no response and so was bound to become Parsva's disciple, and he was given full ordination as a bhiksu. Although he had to consent to this,

It used to be that if you were a good enough translator the king would unsuccessfully try to breed you and the religion you were translating for would condemn you as a harlot
un Lie cortell or the original texts, and sometimes even dis- torted them. Kumarajiva's translations were different. Yet it appears that Kumarajiva could not read or write Chinese. After all, he was already forty-six years old when he arrived in Ch'ang-an. His greatness lay in his immense learning and understanding, and the leadership he exercised in the translation project, a task he accomplished with the assistance of his teams of assistants. His reputation as a genius was such that the Chinese ruler in the north thought it a waste for him not to have progeny, and offered him concubines. Kumarajiva acquiesced to the royal wishes, for which he has been severely criticized by other Buddhist monks. However, we know of no child prodigies from him.
