January, an hour before dawn, I could wait but the temptation is too strong. Bundled up, we head out. It’s black as pitch. The only sounds are the gushing creek and the rain. We could walk before dawn in the summer too but the thrill isn't the same. The rain doesn’t belong to me, but I thank it.

The foxes’ coats are lush and full as winter settles in. They'll come less often once the Northern California monsoons hit. We hope for next week. That’s Evan crossing the patio to the right and Evelyn coming down the fence on the left. Adin’s coat is fluffier too, for a greyhound. Canid couture.

I say farewell to November, mark the days until she returns and relish the moments to come: darker and darker, cool to cold, my plants and animals gathering in, hosting their energy, and my own psyche rising and falling to levels unknown in other seasons, cherishing the deep silence at last.
