Same reason having a daughter is disgraceful in many cultures. Because society is structured around accumulating wealth, if you cannot produce labor or be traded you’re considered a worthless burden.

It’s been a while since I used a slow cooker, but I know on the low setting you could probably leave them cooking over night. You’d need to cook them on a higher setting and let them sit for 2-3 hours.
