What do you think?

Which provide a place for authors to publish free works until they gain enough critical mass to launch as paid products. In that sense, piracy acts as a "publisher/platform" of sorts for copyrighted stuff instead of indie.

The key is having a quality product that people really want to get, and if you don't make it easily available, piracy will rise instead. A similar success case is Wattpad or sites like Royal Road...

Once the product is available legally, hassle free, with a similar or better user experience as the pirate one and a reasonable price, people will gladly pay for it, and then some, with special editions, physical, etc. Look at crunchyroll's growth or mangaplus.

When you look at the growth of manga and anime in the west, it would have been impossible without fan scanlations and piracy in general. Japanese corps would never have realized the appetite for their product if not for fans leading the charge, then buying the product once it was legally available.
