That’s actually a really good acceptance rate! You’re doing amazing!

I don’t recall getting specific feedback on why they like the story but if I had to guess, I’d say the subject matter and world building helped it get accepted. Doubtful the anthology got too many other stories with such a strange premise!

It was for an anthology with a theme of women after the fall of civilization. I didn’t write the story specially for that call (I have poor luck with that), but sent it anyway.

The story itself was about preserving memory through mummification.

I’m happy to answer any other questions you might have, too!

I’d say the #1 way to increase your odds of a sale is to increase the number of stories you have ready to go, that way you increase the number of submissions you can make.

And don’t let rejections discourage you, either. I still get nearly 100 rejections for every 100 submissions I send out.

All magazines work differently in terms of slush readers and editors—some don’t use readers at all, some have armies of readers. One reader might pass a story up to the editor where another wouldn’t. So there’s a lot of luck and other factors that go into it, too.

Oh gosh, good question! I’d say it took a couple years of trying before I made my first sale, which is the first time an editor/publisher noticed my work (as far as I know). Probably over 100 submissions in that time, and I wrote dozens of stories that’ll never see the light of day around then, too.

That sounds like a lovely plan, and like it would be a wonderful time! Ah, I hear you about the time and short it would take to arrange… but with all those opportunities in one place, it would be a retreat to remember.

Ah, thanks! Yeah, the pumpkin itself is an important factor in the making of the pancakes, I’ll bet. 😊

Thanks so much, happy (belated) Thanksgiving!!

OMG, if you get that retreat center set up, keep me posted! I’d love to take part of I could. 😄

Ooo, I was close!

Uh oh, is there gonna be a murder in this novel? I have a bad feeling about these twists, LOL…
