Marna Nightingale — ICE gets the skates.

Oh, military gentlemen, they bluster, roar and pray.
Nine sailors on the Nancy, boys, made fifty run away.
The powder in their hair that day was powder sent their way
By poor and ragged sailor men, who swore that they would stay.
like each other in their beliefs and rules than they are like their fellow believers or disbelievers in other countries or social circles. They just explain them differently.

And yes you get those bonkers fundies who go around measuring hemlines.
But they are generally being bonkers in ways that match their culture and chosen social group, not in ways that the majority of members of their faith would recognize. Secular and religious conservative Americans are much more

In Orthodox Judaism and Islam you get the idea of modesty also being about not showing some parts of you outside your family and others of your gender, which is a bit more complicated. But it's still not about shame, it's about ideas of ritual separation and purity just as dietary laws are.

just because it pleases your ego, not because you want to please them or makes you feel good in itself. Spending time or money on clothing or jewelry that you have an obligation or duty to spend elsewhere, whether that's feeding the poor or paying the rent, if the rent then falls on someone else.

Wearing things that make you feel good in your skin. Wearing culturally appropriate clothing or lack thereof. Dressing for self-expression. Not modest: dressing or acessorising with intent to make people want what they can't or shouldn't have, whether that's you or your looks or your jewelry ...

Perfectly modest: dressing for comfort, the weather or your activities, even if that means short shorts or a string bikini or what have you. Looking cute or hot to appeal to people you want to be attracted to you who are free to be attracted to you and you are free to be attracted to.

Not that it always gets presented that way but I'd argue that in this case it's not on religion, it's on the perfectly secular vices of misogyny and coercion because you see almost the exact same arguments from "rationalist" manosphere chuds.

Well, as Lewis says, it is not about body parts. A life model is behaving modestly. (Also obviously you aren't required to accept it as a virtue or practice and I have no interest in persuading you, just in answering the question.) Modesty in the Christian sense is about intention and priorities.

It's probably part of the welcome package tbh :-)

And may the good Lord bless and keep the honourable member for Kootenay-Revelstoke, who in 1982 was completely done with absolutely everyone's shit.

Oh definitely there's a lot of
non-landing humour. It's usually possible to back out of that one, though, but people mostly don't try.

I try to avoid the phrase "agree to disagree" but in this case I think I should suggest that probably neither of us actually wants to find out who's right and we would both like this to stay unresolved?

Before your government started systematically running itself and your military into the ground I'd've agreed but not gonna lie, at this point an Iraq- or Vietnam- level deployment has a fair chance of bogging you down and leaving y'all wide open to the army of the next country Trump pulls this on.
