The Mud Volcano Guy - I love and study mud volcanoes! Geomechanics & pore pressure specialist. Opinions my own.
⚒️🧪 The Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan erupted again yesterday (12/11/25)!

The eruption occurred at 3 vents. Sadly one vent was under a house.

This is its 11th eruption in the last ~3 years, most recently in June 2025.

Video courtesy of my friends 陳玉意 and 張寶惠.

Best with sound on.

🧪⚒️ Mag 6.3 earthquake just north of Timor today at ~2:04am in Timor Leste (recorded on my home seismometer).

No reported damage or injuries.

Lots of mud volcanoes in that part of Timor that are well within potential reactivation range.

I’ll look out for any news!

⚒️🧪 Fiery eruption of Otman-Bozdagh mud volcano in Azerbaijan!

The Otman-Bozdagh mud volcano erupted at ~8:27am local time today (11/10/25).

Three eruption phases of between 4-12 minutes were recorded over an ~40 minute period.

⚒️🧪 This week’s massive M8.8 earthquake off Kamchatka was caused by an ~160x 480km fault surface sliding by about 9m. In contrast, these lovely itsy-bitsy faults have slips of only about 1cm or so, but are no less impressive.

Airport Road outcrop in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. Pen for scale.

The islands have a many mud volcanoes! Here’s my incomplete map. Many MVs are remote, and eruptions may not be reported.

Whilst the quake could potentially trigger an eruption, I note that triggered eruptions in the area have historically required larger quakes, greater than M7.0.

We will see!

There’s a long history of earthquake triggered mud volcano eruptions in the Tanimbar and Kai islands. I’ve found mentions in papers of triggered eruptions going back >200 years!

Most recently, the M7.9 9th Jan 2024 quake caused two tiny islands to rise up next to the big Pulau Kabawa mud volcano.

Oh yeah. The flows from mud volcanoes can be amazing with their shapes, colours, pattens and textures.

I’m not very familiar with the geology there, but, from the little I know, it seems an unusual place to find one.

This mud volcano is not related in any way to the magmatic volcanoes of the Andes.

What I do know is that it’s very cute!

Peru is not at all well known for mud volcanoes!! Two active mud volcanoes have been documented in Southern Peru, but this new one is the first mud volcano I’m aware of in this part of Peru.

🧪⚒️New baby mud volcano found in Peru!

Locals first noticed this small mud volcano just to the NW of Cuzco on the 6th of July.

It consists of a single ~60cm high gryphon that is gently erupting and bubbling away.

Awww! Welcome to the world you cute little thing!

And here’s a nice sunset one from the November 2023 eruption.

I sure do have videos of this mud volcano burning at night in previous eruptions!

Another video from 張寶惠.

The eruptions are lit by the locals to flare off the methane gas bursting out with the mud.

The mud volcano temple is in the background.

⚒️🧪 The Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan erupted again today.

The eruption lasted from ~5am to ~3:40pm. This is its 10th eruption in the last 3 years, most recently the 6th July 2024.

Bitumen seeps occur in many places, and it has been used since ancient times for caulking boats, mortar, adhesives and medicines.

The area of Central Italy where these amazing photos come from has been mined for bitumen since ancient Roman times.

Bitumen is a highly viscous natural mixture of hydrocarbons derived from crude oil.

It is solid enough to form these big snaking loops, (or rest an egg on for some reason? 🤷), yet is still a fluid that flows very slowly.

⚒️🧪 Thick black goop pouring from the earth is a horror often seen in TV shows or movies. Fortunately this is an amazing geological feature, and not a malevolent monster!

This 1956 pic is of a natural bitumen or asphalt seep pouring into a mine shaft in Lettomanoppello, Italy. 🧵

🧪⚒️ 19 years. This terrible man-made mud volcano tragedy has now gone on for 19 years without pause….

⚒️🧪 I thought I’d lost this great mud volcano eruption video but I just found it again!

I do not recommend ever driving a boat over the eruption like this person did! There is a lot of methane being released, which can ignite.

Fantastic! I once did a huge twitter thread trying to classify all cakes as rocks, and made this for cakes I classified as igneous intrusive!

🧪⚒️ The Lokbatan mud volcano in Azerbaijan erupted on Wednesday the 9th April.

This is Lokbatan’s 29th recorded eruption. Its most recent previous eruption was in September 2024.

No fires this time, but Lokbatan has often had fiery eruptions.

This eruption looks like it was probably at the biggest mud volcano on the island, located at 18.7468079, 93.6640447.

I'm not sure if this eruption is linked to the recent tragic earthquake, and the exact eruption date is uncertain.

There was a 1970 paper published in the journal Science that examined the sound wave velocity through lunar rocks and found them to be remarkably similar to several cheeses…
