Our winter Scandinavian visitors, the Fieldfare and Redwing, were out in large numbers on the lunchtime walk today in freezing conditions. Also a few Meadow Pipits. The Montgomeryshire Canal is frozen over again.

Gorgeous evening out there with the fog advancing and receding across the fields then it opens up to a setting sun.

Fog has rolled in unexpectedly. Everything looks ethereal out there

Thought I would give this novel a go. It’s not often you get some Neolithic fiction and I think the last time I read a novel with a Neolithic setting it was Jim Crace’s Gift of Stones which I really enjoyed.

Enjoying a read of the Red River photobook by Jem Southam. It takes a look at the less visited landscape and communities around Redruth and Camborne in Cornwall - the kind of places I like because they are less visited and stuffed with industrial heritage. Plenty of accompanying text and poems too👍

-5 this morning and the Montgomeryshire Canal was frozen over.

Watched the film Eden (2024). I had never heard of this intriguing real-life mystery that played out on the Galapagos island of Floreana in the 1930’s. Well worth your time 👍

Gorgeous out there today in crisp sunshine ☀️ Headed up the Montgomeryshire Canal to Llanymynech via Carreghofa Locks

Somehow Lola finds the largest log in the field deposited by the recent floods and proceeds to drag it around the rest of the walk - too big to throw 🙂

The old straight track - a ‘green lane’ preserved by the River Vyrnwy at Carreghofa. Amazed this one has survived hedgerow removal for agriculture.

Enjoying, if that’s the right word, the Channel 4 Summerwater drama. It’s kind of bleakly compelling as the back stories of fractured lives unfold and intertwine.

Nice of the Border Collie Trust to send a birthday card for Lola after one year in her new home 🙂

Dropped into Cymer Abbey near Dolgellau. Construction started in 1198 under the Abbey’s patron Maredudd ap Cynan, Lord of Meirionydd, for the Cistercian order. It was never a wealthy abbey & the normal church plan was never completed. By 1388 there were only 5 monks and the abbey was closed in 1536

Nice to see the restored gold processing Britten Pans are still OK at the Coed y Brenin Visitor Centre near Dolgellau after NRW closed their premises. They originally came from the Beddcoedwr gold mine (Marina Mine) and were used between 1904-1935. There’s a small Blakes stone breaker next to it.

Flood water at the River Vyrnwy from the Vyrnwy aqueduct and it’s still rising. All the fields between here and Llanymynech under up to 1m of water now in places.

It’s one year since I got Lola from the Border Collie Trust in Staffordshire - here’s she is on the day I met her. She has helped me so much since I lost my wife Gill to cancer last year along with family and friends and even some of you on here too - thanks 🙂 ❤️🙏
