Purah, Zelda, & Link... also Robbie while we're at it, all among the few remaining survivors from the Pre-Calamity era were in some way victims of the old kingdom's authoritarian rule. That's what makes their bond special. It's camaraderie. & they're working together to build a better future.
Tears Of The Kingdom Purah saying, “It’s showtime!” Robbie continues his work as a head researcher, though Purah & Zelda tend to hog the spotlight among these nerds. Here Link meets him in the Hateno Tech lab, a bit cleaner than when Purah was in charge of it during Breath Of The Wild, though there’s still a few ceramic mugs & several books & loose papers strewn about. A few pieces of paper taped to a huge billboard too. Pre-Calamity Zelda getting reprimanded by her father for taking a break from prayer to look at the progress of Sheikah technology, claiming she’s wasting her time. Link kneels behind her, unable to intervene as his voice had already been taken by the burden on his own shoulders.

Sheikah technology was once banned by the kingdom, her people forced into an Amish-like lifestyle until the king one day was like, "Oops, nevermind, we need your technology again. Work for us." & she did.

She was visibly thrilled to do the work in AOC, but that said...
Young actual teenage Purah in Age Of Calamity, nervously examining the Sheikah slate after nearly dropping it. An emotion never seen from any of her older selves. Despite the nervousness & insecurity, there was some pep to her step still. Here’s her pulling a signature pose she’d keep doing right up through Tears Of The Kingdom. Framing her eyes with her pinky and pointer finger, almost like a variation on the piece sign.

I don't even get the impression that she regrets the artificial lengthening of her life in the slightest. She's a nerd who's probably thrilled to bits that she gets to work on something worthwhile now.

That said, there's unique, unspoken camaraderie between her, Zelda & Link.
The most direct evidence we see on-screen for Purah & Zelda’s relationship in Tears Of The Kingdom is found only in Purah’s character bio. Though it’s natural to assume they’re close even without this information. Zelda’s a nerd, Purah’s a nerd, they know each other. This word of god information is almost not necessary. Bio text: Purah. Head of Lookout Landing. The highest authority on ancient technology. She has served Princess Zelda's family for much of her life and has worked with the princess tor research the Zonai civilization. Most recently. they started an investigation into the outbreak of gloom. She has used herself as a test subject in her experiments. Despite being over a century in age, she reversed her aging to the extreme and actually looked like a child not too long ago.

You’d expect such an inherently angsty backstory to belong to like a love-interest, or at least a heavily loyal childhood friend. But no. Purah doesn’t give off any of those vibes in the slightest.

She’s like the peppy popular girl from school who calls everyone cute nicknames & stuff. In BOTW esp.
Purah being sassy & overfamiliar with Link yet not lastingly affected by him forgetting about her. Going from “Nooo how can you forget me!” To unfazedly noting it down in her notebook saying “hmm, that’s to be expected.” Here she’s further teasing Link by muttering as she notes something down in her notebook, “hmm… post Slumber Of Restoration, subject is plagued by… presumptuous… tendencies. Noted!”

Purah is genuinely one of the best Legend Of Zelda characters & most of what makes her great completely flies over folk's heads!

She invented immortality at least in-part to ensure she’d be alive when Link woke up, & the Princess saved… but also to help rebuild the kingdom.

The Spirit PC game! My first open-world-ish adventure! Technically some progression gating but IIRC so much of it was sidequests it felt very open. Metroidivanias are closer cousins to the open-world format than most are willing to admit anyways.

Internet Archive file still glitched though. 😭

CrisTales! A fascinating time travel JRPG-style game that involves switching between eras at will to solve problems. I admit I haven’t finished it, but… 👀.

The distinctly Columbian take on the genre is neat & refreshing. I should pick it back up now that I’ve recovered my love for gaming 💕.

Insaniquarium, it’s a fish sim game, but you also gotta shoot aliens that try to eat your fish. Wait what? That’s all you need to know, frankly.

Also how am only I just now, today finding out they ported this to mobile AND Steam? Us early 2000s gamers never get told shit. 😤
Somebody’s mouse button is hovering over the goofy grin on the big round blobby alien dude’s face, ready to spam the mouse button to shoot & protect the normal fish swimming around elsewhere in the tank from getting consumed by this guy’s bottomless, inflatable belly. Or maybe they’re spamming the feed fish food button till his belly cartoonishly pops, it’s hard to tell from a single screenshot.

Ah, Virtual Villagers… I know I said The Tree Of Life was a cozy game for me, but Secret City is one of the more intense ones.

These idle sim games from the early 2000s did not mess around. There is no saving your game, & when villagers die, they die for good. I’m funny to call any of them cozy. 😂
The many collectibles to be found in Virtual Villagers Secret City, colored in ones are the ones already found. Many different turtle shells, coral pieces, feathers, tablet pieces… there’s also three gemstone shaped holes in the big door in the middle.

Like, sure none of them are quite Animal Crossing, but on the spectrum of coziness I'd say the Legend Of Zelda series leans far more cozy than many would consciously give it credit for.

Like, y’all, if catching bugs for kids, rounding up Cuccos & lil Korok fellas isn’t cozy then idk what is. 😆

Even arguably it's darkest installment: Majora's Mask, stays true to this focus on helping commonfolk with their smaller problems first, if not more than ever. Building reasources & rapport til the big problem(TM) can be solved.

Often what seems to be a mere sidequest turns out to be essential.
Anju & Kafei thank Link for helping them reunite. You got the Couple’s Mask! It is filled with their love. One of the many Masks needed to obtain the Fierce Diety Mask for the game's intended solution to the final boss. It’s a mostly blank plain rose-tinted mask where in lieu of an actual face there’s instead with a glowing abstract symbol, very vaguely depicting two shapes barely touching as if they’re kissing.

... but especially in how some of the most compelling elements IMO within nearly if-not all the games—in some way involve the lives of common people? 🤔

Baby me’s first open-world (ish) adventure I think. 👀
Screenshot from the game’s Homeland area, a gorgeously green pasture where Spirit’s friends graze. The trees have a notably painterly art-style to them, reflections seen in the stream’s water. A Native American casually offers to sell a spyglass to a horse in exchange for lil cartoonized arrowheads, which function as the game’s rupee like currency. The man’s name is Eagle Eye, he’s chilling near the Homeland with a campfire & wagon. He also has apples & sugar cubes in stock. Dialogue reads: “I bought that spyglass from a soldier man, and I’ll sell it for 200 arrowheads.” Spirit looking across the lake, a natural lil gyser spring behind him. The cartoonized minimap shows the game’s areas, which include the nearby frontier town, a Native American village across the river, and the mining settlement across a particularly large ravine. The little gyser’s on the minimap too despite having no functional role in the story I remember. The merchant’s wagon & Rain’s cave is also on the minimap.
