You see very similar attitudes in other European countries, and even the U.S. has figured out how to show utter contempt for its "territories" (god forbid one call Puerto Rico a colony). I thought Empireland did a brilliant job of covering the UK story. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/702442...

Everyone knows that the sole purpose of colonies is to be exploited. One allowed small numbers of natives of those places to go to Britain to educate them into the ways of the civilized, for greater compliance, but surely they didn't believe the Commonwealth was a real thing? How very foolish.

Oh this was a great story!

I may be misremembering, but I could've sworn that I have encountered differentiated fees outside of developing countries. I also don't find them inherently immoral, as long as they're reasonable and actually support improved stewardship.

A little too on the mark..

I don't remember seeing any employees when I rode in Detroit, but that may have been a fluke. Do you know if they'll be doing short trains for off-off hours? That's something I like a lot in Stockholm.

Looking forward to trying it out on my next visit! A question on the automation: In Detroit, the automated trains looked eerily empty to me in the evening, and as a woman, I found it a bit creepy. How will they make riders feel secure during lower-ridership hours?

I don't doubt their bad intentions. Just checking, though: We don't have national IDs here. Will anyone deemed to "look foreign" just be overcharged unless they carry proof of citizenship? And if it's just proof of residency, what about folks without ID?

It's actually pretty common in other countries, including my native Costa Rica, but also in Europe. The actual fees being set sound nutty, but giving people whose taxes pay for the parks a break on the fees is reasonable. Doesn't make them non-evil people, but enough with the drama!

Cranberry Relish: The NPR Recipe That Divides Thanksgiving Tables
It's the Friday before Thanksgiving, which means it's time for the annual recitation of Mama Stamberg's cranberry relish. Love it or hate it? Listeners weigh in.

Voted! The most interesting and thought-provoking book I've read this year.

Just finished it. What a wild ride it was! Two fascinating protagonists. So many questions.

It's vile. And completely detached from reality. If anything, the push should be to disaggregate better. I was looking at a funder's data recently and noticed a perfect breakdown of male/female project beneficiaries. No NA or unknown. Really? I asked. No answer. It's already by sex, and sloppy AF.

I liked this line: "Only chumps make money by selling goods or services these days; the real geniuses rely on management fees, deal fees, dividend recapitalizations, real estate deals, and the like."

Mike Johnson could stand next to his mother and deny knowing her. His ability to shamelessly lie and spin is really extraordinary.

And calling his dad's cousin "Aunt" is a lie? That's bull. I get the initial questions, but as soon as he named a specific female older cousin, this should've died. Maybe Snopes could've explained familial terms among non-white families. In South Asia, you don't even have to be related to be Auntie.

This is idiotic and racist. Mamdani himself said he wasn't referring to what Americans strictly define as an "aunt," but to an older female relative he called "aunt," as literally billions of people do around the world. It's naked xenophobia to treat this as a controversy.
