are highly complex and causally non-redundant, they're extremely important for typical trait development –– & thus are conserved through evolution.

(Mess up a ChIM, and you mess up a whole trait: a body part might fail to grow, for example –– or grow in the wrong place!)

1. uncertainty about AI suffering;
2. limited caregiving resources; &
3. the many precarious entities whose existence is currently threatened (e.g, kids dying of preventable diseases & political violence),

we call for ethical decision-making based on recognizable markers.

Consider the difference between a mouse and a laptop.

A mouse is a precarious entity: its continued existence as a mouse depends on its dynamic & constitutive exchange of energy with the environment.

A laptop exhibits no such dependence. When it is unplugged, its structure remains the same.
