Retired old lady who loves cats and enjoys history, politics (at least I used to), birds, and living in the DMV. Don't ask me about the state of customer service these days because I'm trying to remain calm.
That's why Grump is knocking down big parts of that structure I guess.

For the last century, the US depended on nurses we imported from Canada, the Philippines, and elsewhere. Our current immigration policy is not helping solve the problem you identify.

I think most of us could manage back to the 1920's, and perhaps adapt to things since the 1850's. Before that I think you'd quickly be killed by the regular people.

No, but every year my grandma used to recite "The Cremation of Sam Magee" to us. She was born in 1892 when people had to entertain each other, and she had a ton of great material. We kids loved it when Sam said "close the door!"

I just wonder how the fat rat expects to run away with his pockets full of gold bars. He'll never make it.

Don't sell yourself short Tom, you are still that overbearing professor, whether we like it or not.

The last time we had net negative migration, IIRC, was during the Great Depression.

I knew it was over when they took down the menu at McDonalds and put pictures of the food with the price in their stead.

Me too! My mom told me stories of her mother, who liked to play the numbers, and would gamble away their grocery money during the Great Depression. And because of that gambling woman I never met, l've never been able to gamble all my life. These are the things we inherit.

At least the internet is forever. Much like a Nazi tattoo.

I noticed the other day the first two episodes of a series were ad-free, but once you opted into episode three the ads began.

Thank your wife for me. We needed a break.

Thank you. I remember the Republican purists who warned in 1980 about the GOP's embrace of the evangelical crowd. They were told they didn't understand what was needed to win.

Same. I hear talk of left, right, or centrist, and all I want is one example so I can try to orient myself.

I never heard this story. I was taught that when the Christian Romans showed up, they told the pagans they could convert, or go stand by that big trench they just dug . . ..

Did Lincoln even have indoor plumbing? (serious question)

I'll be very interested to see if any higher percentage of those rejected by this new expanded SAVE system are older/elderly. SAVE derives its naturalization data from other USCIS systems which are NOT complete for anything prior to 1975. It has always been a problem in the SAVE program.

There's a fast food kind, but the original is what I ate as a kid at the diner. They came out of the oven rather square and puffy. Often they'd put gravy on top, otherwise a little butter. Yum.
