i like data science, statistics, hockey, public policy, the business of video games, tattoo, etymology, and experimental music.

i try hard to be kind.
You’re right to be upset.

There’s also some dodgy versions of toad in a hole that, while I‘m sure they predate ours, are not to be encouraged.

possums are sweeties and won’t bother you. i wouldn’t scoop a wild one but i would totally hug a rescue.

raccoons are evil incarnate. cute, but the cute is a warning about the evil.

Weirdly, this is entirely ok if it's a street address.

Well actually the data center orders are more profitable than the consumer/wholesaler orders so they get scheduled ahead.

Genuinely curious how much Howard Hughes paid his tree sandwich guy.

Eh. Basic macro econ says this pencils out.

You want rising wages more than you want falling prices. And you want taxes on excess profit that should've happened in 2021-22 more than that.

Pretty sure Bezos isn't interested in you getting either.

Porsche ownership is measured in "divorces" not "families".

This is so tired. Apple already addressed this.

If you go Settings->Accessibility->Kill Bots there’s a setting called “Design Averse Plebian” that has the genetic clones reproduce at a linear rate instead of exponential.

daily reminder that if you’re smart enough to be an engineer but also socially competent you don’t become an engineer

Shout out everyone who likes to socialize by standing near people socializing without ever speaking to or interacting with them directly.

Global average is ~15 per 100k. US was never great and got worse post-pandemic and is now both driving the average and near it.

Thailand and Vietnam are both about 30, which is worst in east Asia and near the worst in the world.

There's a new OS update today (26.2) that has still more features that let you turn this crap down.

I can't find a replacement I can afford yet, either, but I'm haunting the Free Geek listings until then.

If you invest with these guys you’re unironically seeking write-offs.

Frogmouths and bitterns on that “that’s not a bird; that’s a stick” business.

I like this a lot.

Also they teach in argumentation that the mathematically perfect metaphor is just an exact restatement of the original idea. So you got that goin for you. :)

Also, If there is a metaphor in the original, needs to be a metaphor in the translation.

The semantic meaning inside the metaphor is important, but the fact that there *was* a metaphor is *also* super semantically meaningful.

Always keep the flowers, even if they're a little different color.

If the joke is about someone being overbusy to the point that it was consuming their personality, you could say she was "burning the candle at both ends" or "spinning too many plates" instead of "猫の手も借りたい" (so busy that cat should help).

Different path, same ending.
December 13, 2025 at 8:53 PM
If there's a joke in the original, the new work needs to have a joke. The joke doesn't have to be the same, but it has to *land* the same.

Not as important for the same start or middle, but as close as you can at the end.
