we're already up to pages 11 and 12 of INTO THE BLADELANDS.
ari meets some diabolically-named characters. we get some news. ari finally has enough.
Sky: Hah! Not anymore. Two humans arrive, wearing dark clothes. They're young, but they both have white hair in that fantasy kind of way. The woman, Ylyse, looks sweet and wears a translucent veil. The man, Yves, looks like he hasn't ever slept or felt joy. Yves: My prince! I was hoping to speak. My trackers - Ari: I know you! You're from the Ydyllyd family! You're the rulers of Darknight! Yves looks offended at the interruption. Yves: ... Who is your man here? Sky: Forgive him, he's just excited. This is my good friend, Ari Loesser. Yves: Hmm... I don't know the family. Sky: Well, not everyone is as famous as you are, Yves. Ylyse: A pleasure to meet you, sir. Any friend of Prince Sky's is a friend of ours. Sky (to Ari): Anyway, Ari, you were right. This is Lord Yves Ydyllyd of Darknight. And I would be remiss not to mention the lovely Lady Ylyse, his sister, and my betrothed. Ari is stunned silent. Yves: Introductions bore me to tears. As I was saying, my men have found some shed unicorn hairs in the Princewood. It's a good sign for the hunt tomorrow. Ari: Augh, wow, I don't feel so good. Sky: Ari? Ari swoons. Sky catches him. Sky: woah! Hey! Hey there! Ylyse: Oh no! Sky: It's... it's been a long day for him. I'll take him back to my tent and make sure he's looked after. But we'll talk later, Yves. I'll catch up with you. Yves: Yes... I suppose you'll have to. Sky takes Ari back to his tent. Sky: Come on, buddy, it's okay. You're okay. Y'know, I was pretty sick myself when I first came from the Other World. Ari reels around to confront him. Ari: What the FUCK is going on, Sky?!?!?

Ari: The pun.. the punish... p... the p... the pun?!?!? Elf: You'd better think fast, stranger. A young man with long blonde hair and a scar across his face appears, partially obscured behind some trees. It is immediately apparent who he is. Sky: Zerra! Zerra, what's going on over there? The elf, Zerra: Sky! I told you to stay hwere it was safe while I made sure- Sky: Come now, it's my anni... versary. Sky and Ari lock eyes for the first time. Ari, shocked and in tears: Sk... Sky? Sky tears up also. Sky: hhh. heh. it's... it's Ari. He breaks into a run, going to sweep Ari into a hug. Sky: IT'S ARI! Zerra: Uh, who? They embrace. Sky: It's Ari. It's Ari. It's Ari. Ari: It's me? it's YOU! How are you even real? How are you alive? You were gone. You were dead. Sky pulls back to get a good look at him. Sky: Gone? Yes. Dead? Not just yet. Ari, don't you know where we are? It's the bladelands. It's real, Ari. It's all real. Always has been. Just like I thought. Gods, you look so well. So young! Other than the scruff, you look just the same. Ari: Heh, I guess. I dunno. But this does explain her. He waves awkwardly at Zerra. Her elf ears assume an expression that resembles someone cocking their eyebrows. Ari: If we're in the bladelands, that's why there's an elf.

Five years after Sky disappeared, Ari is walking into the woods behind his childhood home. He's on the phone with his mom, and it's nighttime. Ari (on phone): No, I told you, Ma. I can't make it to dinner. It's the anniversary. ... What I always do. I need this, okay? I'll see you guys next week. He opens one of the two cans he brought with him and puts it in the grass on the hill beside him. Ari, sighing: Hey, Sky. It's Ari again. Been a while. Some time passes. Ari: So, remember how last year I said I was sure the new Game of Thrones book was gonna come out? Guess who looks like a big idiot now? I dunno, I sort of hope he doesn't ever finish the series at this point. Some things are better when they don't have a real ending. Like you. Cheers, Sky. He clinks the cans together, but the can set aside for Sky starts rolling down the hill, spilling beer everywhere. Ari: Aw, shit. He chases it to the base of the hill and sees something sparkling behind a tree. Ari: What... what the hell? He reaches behind the same tree Sky reached behind five years ago. He emerges into a forest in midday. Ari: Hel... Hello? Hello? Hell-- He's interrupted by an arrow thrumming straight past his head. Ari: Ah! Elf: Halt! State your business, stranger. We see an elf woman with red hair and a bow and arrow. She's in front of a sprawling landscape that includes a forest, a camp and a castle in the distance. Elf: Poaching in the Princewood is punishable by death.
