Thanks ! I wonder if Neil remembers this gig. Large crowd, perhaps 5-10k people on the campus (free festival which I then organized for 3 years). DC played in chamber pop configuration with guitar, piano, cello and violin. Fantastic memory of my teenage years !

Hi Ralph ! My favorite is Promenade. So many great songs ! The summerhouse, Tonight we fly, are among my favorites. Here is a picture of Neil I took in spring 1994 when he played in the rock festival organized in my university in Toulouse. That was during an acoustic set a few hours before the show.

Ha ha! Good luck with your talk Sylvain! I once chaired a session during the Nobel announcement with a possible laureate in the room. A TV crew had even come from Japan and interviewed him before the session. But he didn’t get it, and the TV guys left within minutes. A bit of a sad story in the end…

Together, these records trace the path from protest folk to New Music and City Pop
Here’s my playlist: no overlap with the @lightintheattic.bsky.social comp, but very much in its spirit.
Hope you enjoy & maybe labels will take note…

Fukinotou (ふきのとう), from snowy Hokkaidō, brought soft harmonies and rural nostalgia to mid-70s folk. Less political than their Kansai peers, but evocative of landscapes lost to Japan’s rapid urbanization. I particularly love their song 白い冬, "White winter".

Rabi Nakayama (中山ラビ) brought a raw, intimate edge to Japan’s early 70s folk. Her early records feels closer to Joan Baez or Joni Mitchell than to the polished pop of the time - vulnerable vocals and confessional lyrics. A rare and powerful female voice in the folk boom.

Ayumi Ishida (いしだあゆみ), idol and actress, ventured into pop ballads colored by rich arrangements. Blue Light Yokohama (1969) captures urban melancholy and foreshadows the crossover into City Pop.

Rokumonsen (六文銭), founded by Takashi Nishioka after Five Red Balloons, mixed wit, irony, melancholy and a Beatles-like sound. Their name, “six coins” to cross into the afterlife, carried symbolic weight.

Garo (ガロ, 1970) were a bit Japan’s Crosby, Stills and Nash: crystalline 3-part harmonies & acoustic sounds. A bridge between protest folk and the polished “New Music” sound that followed.
