When I was a kid, I had a children’s book about a king who summoned cats to get rid of the palace’s mice, then dogs to get rid of the cats, then elephants to scare the dogs away, and then mice to get rid of the elephants. In retrospect, it seems like an apt metaphor for American foreign policy.
