I managed to improve transparencies in the #Retroquad engine even more.

Now the distorted color banding on the wall near the weapon icons is gone.

Q2RTX does have an advantage over the official Quake 2 remaster now: The underwater warping is accurate! It does warp both vertically and horizontally with the same intensity.

I'm still not sure if the intensity is the same as of the software renderer at 320x240 or 640x480, though.

Was the Steam release updated?

Btw, the biggest downside of Q2RTX for me is that it uses the wrong textures in many places. This kills the atmosphere, making the game look bland in some places and ugly in others.
