It was stated that it came from the wife of some American Nintendo ex-employee at the time. It was the president of the American branch at the time (who is Japanese) who misunderstood the pronunciation (the woman's name was Polly) and he thought it was Pauline.

And Pauline it became lol

One of the most interesting thing about Nakaue is that he kinda sorta began his relationship and career with Nintendo...by creating Star Fox: Farewell Beloved Falco, a canonical (but Japan only) manga interlude set between SF64 and Adventures, during his tenure at Nintendo Dream.

The whole "Oh Banana!" comes from the DK64 game, which was developed my Rare, a British Videogame developer.

Though I can't tell if this sound is the exact same one from that game but edited or just a brand new one.
