There's always letting odd nuggets of lore stick in your craw and amass effluvia from other legends until it all crystalizes into a beautiful pearl of a fantasy beastie.

...A needlessly visceral analogy, perhaps, but case in point—Norse myth states Dwarves were uplifted from maggots. Ergo:
A large, limbless, eyeless creature like a giant maggot with a great bushy "beard" made of hair-covered mandibles. An image of a stylized iron bell with an opening covered by a steel hood or helmet. A cross-section shows a maggoty Dwarf strapped into the bell with only their "beard" sticking out of the hood. A frontal view of a Dwarf in a sunbell with a horned helm, holding a warhammer in their mandibles. A note says "Prehensile 'beard' used to hold items."

Whelp, Huitzilopochtli and Coyolxauhqi are fighting again. At least the Tzitzimimeh are staying out of it.
