Genshin thoughts: the new AQ is nice and I'm glad to see the Moon Sisters' take on what happened with Nibelung isn't the same as Nicole's take.
But I'm not sure I like the consistent overall theme of "who cares about systemic injustice or truth if our friends are happy in the system."

Here's the thing so many people get wrong about the whole CRT blending thing: It only really did that on crappy CRTs with noisy analogue RF inputs. I should know. I once had a cheap hand-me-down TV that I had to manually tune with a dial.

I was just exposed to one of those 'Why you should only play retro games on a real CRT monitor' videos. They did a comparison.
Sonic's alternating pixel 'transparency' waterfall on A: A modern flatscreen, B: a CRT, and C: with an emulator filter.
A & B were identical. The 'blending' was only on C.

Really seems Clair Obscur is going to clean up in the various GOTY awards because it's a safe, broadly liked game.

This all sounds like criticism, and no, not really. It's a very good game and probably deserving of most of the praise heaped upon it. But almost every part of it feels like any sharp edges have been sanded down for palatability.

PW is tragically funny because you can go back and see how this literacy backslid in real time. English reviewers of 1 called it an adventure game because they correctly saw its resemblance to those older games. But as VN locs later exploded, people erroneously connected the dots in unintended ways.

When I speak of official locs being an unreliable indicator of genre evolution because commercial interests inherently skew and limit the historical threads that can be perceived, it's because of stuff like that: games getting retconned into genres and discourse they never participated in natively.

I genuinely think folks abroad wouldn't have so much trouble keeping Japanese adventure games and their many genre progeny semantically straight if we'd at least localized any more of the former whatsoever in-between the releases of, like, Snatcher in 1995 and Phoenix Wright a literal decade later.

This prosthetic eye made from a mixture of natural tar & animal fat is nearly 5,000 years old. It was found near the city of Zabol in Iran in 2006. Archaeologists believe that the prosthetic eye, which was once painted gold, was worn by an ancient priestess who stood 6’ tall.
