Rosanov's only friends are people he knew as a kid. Shane has "buddies" but only talks to his parents otherwise. They're basically children even into 2014. These prodigies are so isolated/insulated they can't get out of their heads and make a real connection.

Hunter is an adult man with at least one interest outside of hockey. Kip is a real person with a community and friends who tell him to get Saturday shifts to keep meeting his crush.
