If anything it might discourage those with lesser incomes from applying, meaning those from Africa or South-East Asia. Unless, that was actually the point. It's not as if the JICA protesters were screaming about not wanting "uncivilized" people from the "Middle East and Africa".

This is not an efficient way to collect "taxes" if the richest tourists don't even need to pay it. It will also not stop over tourism, if it's still comparatively cheaper to travel, sojourn and shop here.

They compare the Japanese application fee (3000 yen) with that of the US (250 dollars) (which is ridiculously expensive considering that the visa is not a guarantee to entering the country) and say they consider raising it.

What is hilarious is that most of the "foreigner" footage is of white people who would NOT be affected by an increase in visa application fees. It is also hilarious that the only measure they can take against us is rising the entry/exit fee which will also affect Japanese people
