People sometimes have sudden, powerful experiences they describe as ‘spiritual, mystical, energetic, or magical.’ But did you know that almost half of the general population report having had such unusual experiences?

These phenomena, also called altered states or emergent phenomena, are ...

Word of the day is a favourite, from old Scots.

To ‘tartle’ is to hesitate while introducing someone because you have completely forgotten their name.

Too right
I’ve been trying not to talk about this too much but I’ve gotta say, having an aperol spritz after spending an afternoon at the Pantheon is hard to beat.

Ah, I’ve just worked out that by creating chaos at Twitter, Musk is depressing the value of the $13 billion acquisition debt. Eventually he can probably buy I back at half price (it’s already down to 65%) making a cool $6.5 billion (assuming he can then turn Twitter around). Watch this space …

I’m a big fan of our leporine pals, but putting aside this bias for now, this Greek-Sicilian coin is a masterpiece of silver relief work. Just look at the patterning in his ears, the individual whiskers, the taut body. Extraordinary.

I love the depth of his fresco. It feels like you’re actually standing in an orchard and could pluck one of those succulents fruits and gobble it up. It’s from the villa of Livia, Augustus’ wife, and is just one of many beautiful frescoes found there.

Are you feeling peckish? If so, have some eggs, game birds and wash it all down with a jug of wine. This is a really marvellous fresco and reminds me of the famous Dutch still lifes of the 17th century. It’s actually from Pompeii.

Minoan vases with octopuses are always a delight, but relatively common. This rare vase shows a different type of marine animal: an argonaut. It’s an octopus-like animal that lives on the seabed in a shell. The Minoans were masters of depicting aquatic beasts
