I wouldn't worry - I still owe @wyrdscience.bsky.social a reply from about three weeks ago!

Trust me, I'm a doctor. But you certainly don't want me operating on your gangrenous leg.

I think my line will be that you cannot create such documents without knowing the real stuff - how they are written, what they look like, etc. So you need to look at the real stuff to create the fake stuff.

This and other startling insights available on a daily basis to awe you with my acumen.

Just last week I was using that visualiser thing (the modern equivalent I guess) to draw essay plans as we discussed the question in class. That kind of stuff is great!

Great stuff - fantastic to see it in your hands!

Hmmm, I think there are loads of people who would watch a 3 hour documentary series and never touch an academic text. I don't really have a dog in this fight: I enjoyed the video and from memory I also enjoyed the book. And I think my expectations of Youtubers might be slightly lower than yours!

To be fair, he does acknowledge the book as THE source on the topic and point readers towards it at the end. Should it have been more explicitly cited? Possibly. We'd all like to see our work be given prominence and due credit.

I do think the video has much to recommend it for those who perhaps won’t read a complete academic work on the subject (however excellent it might be).

It’s been a while since I read the book (parts of it, he says in typical academic style) so I didn’t notice that.

It's a shame more stuff on Able Archer '83 isn't open access - there's lots of great work out there. On AA83, this recent online posting by the National Security Archive might be of interest to you.

4) Now I just need to crack on and get the book written! Luckily I have a university research sabbatical next semester, which will hopefully give me the time and space to get it knocked into shape!

3) I've been delighted by the thoughtful and considered responses that have already been submitted. Each and every one of them provides food for thought and evidence for the wider impact of scholarly research within the RPG community.

2) What also important to me is archiving and analysing the responses to my work. That's why I've asking if readers would kindly take the time to complete this short survey about my work. This is super helpful for the project as a whole.
