Although if Kingsnorth really is saying that homosexuality is the greatest sin in the modern world, and that’s not some kind of poetic/subversive defence of gay people against prejudice, then I’m not sure he quite deserves this housespace.

This is very sad. Dad was Brian’s producer at LBC throughout the 70s and 80s. I met him on many occasions. He was super-intelligent - a brilliant, natural, fluent talker and interviewer. And a lot of fun. He made an incredibly demanding job sound effortless. And still way ahead of his time.

So - so long as the rest of the Bill remains intact, I think this sounds like a reasonable compromise that will still immensely strengthen workers’ rights.

Meaning that I was afraid the day one unfair dismissal rights - whatever one thinks of this in principle - was in practice going to be a massive deterrent for employers to hire people.

I’ve been involved in enough personal cases to understand not only that employers often act very badly and that the law is stacked in their favour, but that from their perspective employing someone who turns out not to have the aptitude for a role can be an incredible headache.
