Backing this up: environmentalism is strongly tied to cultural taste that signal this anti-materialism. Control for taste, and much of the link between cultural capital and green views disappears.

Against theories of “ecological distinction,” I argue that pro-green views aren’t just about standing out from the less privileged – they’re also a distancing from, nor negaiton of, economic capital and its values.

Against the idea of a “politics of prosperity,” I show that it’s not the most affluent who go green – but those rich in cultural capital.

Why is environmentalism class divided?

My new paper in The British Journal of Sociology maps attitudes to green issues in the social space of economic and cultural capital. Spoiler: it’s not just about being rich.

On a more serious note, the inequality and class politics workshop at #ecprjs25 was amazing. So many brilliant papers and excellent comments from fellow participants. Thanks so much to @mabreyer.bsky.social and @peterla.bsky.social for making it happen and letting @noracwe.bsky.social and me join

Super excited to present my paper on how political issue priorities have shifted in social space over the past ~25 years. Features graphs like this. (Starry sky background because @enlar.bsky.social said these plots look like constellations).

Thank you! The first graph only displays the issues that move the most in social space in that period. There are other issues that are more distinctive of the lower left, but they don’t change as much. You can get an idea from this graph.

Will I see you at the British Sociological Association @britsoci.bsky.social conference? Presenting a new paper on the changing relationship between socio-political preferences and social space over a quarter of a century. Might include graphs like this one! #britsoc25 #sociology #class #politics

Just put this picture on my office wall, inspired by this quote by Lahire from his Les structures fondamentales des sociétés humaines:

Social life in general, and academic institutions in particular, know how to constantly divert us

I’ve struggled so much with Giddens’ Central Problems in Social Theory that I was honestly relieved to see a strongly Giddensian author like Ira Cohen be so blunt about it: the discussion of (French) structuralism is so hard to follow, you’d much prefer to avoid it.

Just published: Class - An Introduction. It's written as a textbook, but contains a lot of new data. It's in Norwegian, but if you're curious about how Jørn Ljunggren and I would introduce class, here's a thread
