My husband of 40 years and I also have separate accounts, held in our trust for survivorship. Learned my lesson in first marriage. My husband controlled our joint account, and monitored every penny I spent, though I earned more money than he did. Could only get a credit card after law changed.

I always advise new wives to keep a separate bank account, to have access to funds and to build a credit history of her own. Split the bills. Keep your job.

First of all, it isn’t all his money. A good portion of it is hers. Her labor in providing a home and raising their children allowed him to be able to bring in that income. She needs a lawyer immediately to be advised of next steps.
