They are set in Russia with an entire mythology of light and dark magical beings and have a very Russian aesthetic to it. I will likely read it again because I find it so engrossing, but it is like reading HP Lovecraft for me now.

I completely forgot about one of my favorite series. The Others series by Sergei Lukyanenko which begins with Night Watch. Unfortunately, he has absolutely trash views on Russia and Ukraine. I owned all of his books before I knew that.
