Our passion fruit vine also has some totally goth caterpillars on it now. Apparently they are an important pollinator for the passion fruits (gulf fritillary), so my husband may soon be out of a job. 😅

Garden update: NOPE BUG edition!

I planted a few additional peppers and should have seen it coming (literally... I was looking at this exact plant last night and didn't see it)

We are now hosting a ginormous hornworm / hawkmoth caterpillar 🫨

Random garden update - the cucumbers and dill finished up a few weeks ago, and our strawberries slowed down.

We got a small but encouraging harvest of raspberries - I am going to expand next year.

I would plant more cucumbers but I think it is getting too hot and dry now here.

I'm normally a very hard working and productive person.

Except this week. I'm all over the place the week of Comic Con.

Trying to do some #SDCC prep by going through the programming with my kids.

My 12 year old E wants some Jurassic Park... I am guessing this panel doesn't count but I am going to try to get us to go it anyways. 😅 I love the weird and wonderful that is Comic Con.

Just finished Charlie Jane Anders' Unstoppable series and had a moment of speechlessness at the end when my husband asked how it went.

You know when you take an exquisite bite of something delicious and just want to take a moment to savor it?

Aaaaand we're also going to #SDCC next week, having snagged 4 day passes this year.

I looked thru the schedule yesterday and only selected like 80 panels I'd like to go to. I need a time-turner. Or maybe better impulse control. 😅

Otherwise, the new job is busy but fun.

I am learning to be comfortable with not knowing everything and everyone again. This part of a new job is not my favorite.

Right before the trip, I attended my first city foundation board meeting. I was sworn in / took the oath of office and maybe teared up just a little.

I know my city is small and the board and committee I'm on are small things, but it feels good to be volunteering to do something good right now.

We just returned from a trip to PNW to visit my family.

I realized on this trip that I've now lived in California for more years than Washington. I do love it up there (especially in the summer), but southern California is my home now.

We had a 🐍 visitor stop by our front door yesterday that needed to be resettled to a trail behind our house.

I am NOT a snake person, but I think this one was very pretty once it was relocated.

One requirement for me to serve on a city committee is completing an ethics training.

Doing my training right now... and thinking how nice it would be to require this sort of reading for all in public service. 😬

I got a job offer late Friday afternoon... and it is actually really good. A promotion. Fully remote. Everyone I interviewed with there seemed legitimately friendly and competent.

I have spent the weekend reviewing the offer / trying to figure out what the catch is. It seems too good to be true.

(short) Story time!

Last year I read "Democracy in Retrograde: How to Make Changes Big and Small in Our Country and in Our Lives" by Emily Amick and Sami Sage, and felt inspired to get involved in something locally.

This was a great quick read / history refresher.

I read Stacy Schiff's book on Samuel Adams, and it is fantastic too.

I haven't mentioned it previously (mostly because it keeps bringing me to tears 😭) but our pup Lylla had surgery to remove a suspicious lump on her neck last week.

We haven't gotten the results of the biopsy yet, but she seems to be recovering pretty well and rocking a rainbow of bandanas all week.

On our last garden store trip I bought a fuchsia that has been absolutely going crazy and gorgeous.

I keep trying to get a picture of the hummingbirds that come to snack but I'm in no way sneaky enough.

I have now made three batches of pickles from my garden though! Since this is our first time and our garden is small (but mighty!), we've been doing fridge pickles.

The first batch was ready about two weeks ago and devoured already. The second is almost gone. We made a third batch yesterday.

The interview went well Friday. I sent a thank you and got a reply almost immediately from the hiring manager - a promising sign, 🤞 right?

A separate company is also having me interview with their CEO next week.

I have an in-person interview tomorrow. So... not great timing.

But everything will be fine. Totally fine.... right?

I've been trying to stay optimistic/upbeat but ugh this month has sucked so bad it is (almost) comical.

Just now while eating lunch a crown from one of my molars broke, with pieces falling out of my mouth like something out of my nightmares.

The tooth is sensitive but doesn't hurt, at least? 😭

Today was the county fair.

My kids convinced me to try the pickle lemonade.

It was... unexpectedly delicious. Like the only thing that may improve on it is some tequila.

I might have some pickle margarita experiments to perform this summer. (For science, of course.)

This weekend has been packed, which has been a nice distraction from everything.

My last day of work was Friday, though they asked me to stay on part time as a consultant. I said yes, but also asked to take a week break, so next week is no work anything.

Job search wise, it has been rough.

I made the final round for one job, they had asked me to get my list of references... and the next day announced new leadership and paused hiring for the position I had been interviewing for.

Post Wind and Truth I have been reading through some of my pile of books from last year's Comic Con. The first two were both horror and both the perfect amount creepy palate cleanser for me. 😅

For reference, I will never voluntarily watch a horror movie, but a good scary book? YES PLEASE. 💙📚
