A small Three Blue Hearts prequel! Max’s friend Ollie Mae’s family took care of an orphaned chimp before releasing her to a sanctuary. Ollie’s story was a separate book, before I squished the stories together & made her & Max friends in the same book. Here’s a letter she wrote to Jane Goodall.
Notepaper on a blue background w/ pencils & notepaper. Letter reads, Dear Jane Goodall, I’ve been writing letters to you for a long time but I never sent them. I told myself that I didn’t want to be disappointed if you didn’t write back or that I didn’t want to bother you because you’re so busy. And I know you’re busy, but I don’t really know if that’s the reason I didn’t send them. Maybe that was part of it and maybe it’s because I sort of knew what you’d say about Ramona. That she didn’t belong here. It always felt like she did belong here, so how can both of those things be true at the same time? One thing we’ll disagree on. Ramona was my sister. Is my sister. We had the same parents, we lived in the same house, played on the same beach. Of course you know that human and chimp DNA is 98.6% the same. That 1.4% can’t make her not my sister. It isn’t fair. Anyway, I’m sending all the letters to you now. I’m sorry I sound mad at you in some of them. I think I was talking more to myself Letter continues: I can’t visit her, not yet. I want to. She wouldn’t understand, she’d think we were there to take her home. She needs time to get to know her new family. But maybe you could go, just to see how she’s doing. I’ve put a piece of sea glass in the envelope with this letter. If you do go, will you leave it somewhere for Ramona to find? The staff there could help you find a good place, I bet. You’ll know when she finds it because she’ll do this excited little hoot-hoot-hoot sound. She can’t hold it in. It’s almost like a food hoot, but not quite. I’ll visit her someday, when she’s older and has been part of her new troop for a long time. She’ll be the alpha female, I just know it. She’s too strong not to be. I know this is a lot to read, all these letters I’ve written. But I really want you to know my sister. You’d like her. And she would like you. Her name is Ramona, and she loves cowboy boots and sea glass. Sincerely, Ollie Mae Juniper
