I don’t think anyone has actually had a principled belief in state’s rights in a very long time. State’s rights is just the argument you fall back on when you have some policy goals that could never be enacted on a federal level.

America fucking loves the flag. When we were kids, we were supposed to pledge allegiance to the flag every morning at school. And it was the flag itself we were pledging allegiance to. “The republic for which it stands” came second after “the flag”.
