It's called Spectacle Creep, and yes, you made sense. It's simply the easiest way to carry on a continuous story from where it left off. An mmo focusing on generational trials would have to be designed for it from the ground up. Blizzard really only refines already successful designs.

If you're coming from Windows, list out your vital software/hardware, and cross check with various distro compatibilities/support. Mint is a good place to start, tho you might be better served with another distro while still using the Cinnamon desktop environment (aka DE, aka the user interface).
