As someone who has been subject to abuse due to my identity, I condemn the violence against the attendees were subject to & I hope they're ok. Everyone deserves to feel safe & welcome at a fur con wherever they are from Slovenia, Eastern Europe or the Deep South.
We are issuing this official statement to inform, be transparent with the public and to prevent the spread of misinformation in regards to what happened on the nights between Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15 during the GoldenHorn 2025 convention. On the night of the 14th of November, we received reports regarding firecrackers being thrown towards the party houses our attendees were staying at. The perpetrators were neither attendees nor guests at the resort. The resort security and local police were notified immediately. We increased our security around the resort and no serious incidents were reported. The following night of the 15th, a similar group was spotted near the party houses again and both resort and police were once again notified. Local police confirmed the arrest of one person. After performing a security sweep around the resort, none of the reported individuals were spotted and we announced that the Some time later, we were informed by attendees that they were attacked in their party rooms, as well as getting sprayed by a fire extinguisher. Resort security and police were notified again, all attendees were advised to stay indoors and lock their rooms. Another security sweep was performed, notes were taken by both witnesses and victims, and statements recorded by local police. All immediate medical attention was provided and all reported injuries were treated. After the security sweep, we advised attendees to remain in their rooms, keep their doors locked, and keep window shutters closed for the night. Attendees at the main hotel building were safely escorted back to their rooms. On behalf of both SloFurs and GoldenHorn, I sincerely apologize for the events that took place and to everyone attending. For 2026, attendee safety will remain our highest priority. We have secured a new convention venue which our security team will ensure the safety of all attendees and make GoldenHorn a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Kevin Hile So, in the last year, I have had two notices from Facebook that one of the groups I manage has violated their standards. One notice said that a post on my group violated intellectual property, and another one said it had nudity or sexual content. Along with the notice, there is a note saying the post was removed. So! Here's my question: How can I know what the problem is if Facebook removed the original post? I have absolutely no idea what the content of the post was. How can I prevent it from happening again in the future? Given the fact that one of my posts was removed for sexual content when it wasn't sexual at all (a photo of Trump with a ball gag in his mouth but no nudity or profanity whatsoever--I just wanted him to shut up), I do not trust that FB actually found something that was truly in violation. But, again, I can't challenge the decision because I don't know WTF the post said or showed. So frustrating.

For generations artists found new ways to make art and improve their tools. Camera obscura/lucidia in the Renaissance made it easy for artists to project real scenes on their canvas and draft accurately. 2/13 - When computer programs got better and digital art became popular, using images in a similar way was bemoaned, called "tracing." But artists still had to assign composition and lighting to the image. Design was a real talent and rendering was a real skill. Unfortunately AI replaces even those. 3/13 - Artists who input a prompt to get a picture are making decisions about words to get the program to produce the result rather than building on centuries of art education to understand and develop their own style. They can ask AI to make something look like Pixar, and it will comply. 4/13 - People who don't understand the principles of art and design can make beautiful things, but they don't understand why it works. Some artists use AI to provide that image to trace, removing all comprehension of design, perspective, figure drawing, and even direction from the process. 5/13 - It's all predicated on the success of other artists who have taken that time to understand art and design, and the nuances of it with direction. I am in favor of any tool or method that helps more people become artists, but not if it eliminates the artistry and process from its creation. 6/13 - Being a good artist requires decisionmaking and creation, too. The more people lean on AI the less they have to think about what they're doing, the less they need to understand why, and the less they physically do to bring a vision to life. What we often see isn't even their vision at all. 7/13 - There are exceptions. People who support more Furry artists than I can imagine are now on fixed income pairing AI art with their stories. People desire images more than words. I've also seen AI propel inspiration in artists who use references. Rather than finding sources, they make their own. 8/13 - But I've seen AI water down skills that used to require hundreds of thousands of dollars in education, years of experience, and replace workers. Perpetuating this technology professionally waters down fields that used to employ people with disabilities who can't perform other jobs. 9/13 - To the naysayers, AI IS capable of producing award-winning art, even if that art is heavily borrowed from others. Copyright lawsuits are going to have a massive impact, but so many businesses are seeing the future through the lens of AI, and it's impacting all of us right now. 10/13 - In summation, AI has changed the world of art practically and economically in ways we are not prepared to comprehend. AI cannot truly replace a fine artist, but that's exactly what businesses are trying to do now. Skills and talent aren't valued: AI tries to make the artist a replacable cog. 11/13 - The Virtual Furry Museum championed digital art in a world that was so traditional and refused to see Furry as genine art in its own right. I champion the artists, their vision, technique, and artistry. For stealing so much of that, I can't accept AI art in the Virtual Furry Museum. 12/13 - And I urge those currently relying on AI to do all the thinking and production of the work to learn the principles and techniques and understand how art works for themselves. Not the AI tools or obsessing over brushes, but design, visual communication, and critical thinking through style. 13/13 - Even an ugly, poorly rendered Fursona sketch is life YOU brought into the world. It's YOUR vision and what YOU can make without anyone or anything else making it for you! It's yours. Take ownership of that and be proud! Never think less of yourself. Learn, improve, and enjoy the process.

7/1/2025 6 Comments Editorial: Objections to a GFA Nominee [Papabear note: Over the course of the last week, I have received mail protesting a nominee for the Good Furry Awards. Below is my response.] [From a person who describes themself as a "greymuzzle investigator"]: I would like to speak as a person who has observed the behavior of Sotalo. With evidence from Dogpatch Press (Screenshots of Sotalo's penchant for drama), I've also personally experienced him. He's a hostile person who tries to destabilize anyone who disagrees with him or exposes his behaviors. He's childish and attacks people quickly. I discovered him through my own connections, a furry I've been tracking for years who is a well-known pedophile. By proxy, said furry (Tuskyn) had come in contact with people that Sotalo has been in contact with, and features in his museum if I recall (I have not personally visited it). Sotalo has gone on record multiple times saying he wishes the age of consent was lower than 18. Furthermore, I have to ask... Why do you allow people to nominate themselves in such a way for such rewards? This just reeks of self ego inflating. That should disqualify, these awards should be nominations by their communities, by those they've touched, not themselves. I saw where his draft of his self nomination was. His museum is not unique. It also does not cover 'the fandom', but people -he- personally finds interesting or 'worthy of being historical'. This includes many people who have a foot fetish who perk his interest, as well as those who are associated with the Furry Raiders or other pedophile furries. In recent drama, Sotalo was part of a PR representation of a convention that wasn't even in his own state, and he frequently got verbally violent with anyone who questioned him. The PR was brought because the convention welcomed the Furry Raiders, well known Nazi furs (complete with red armbands) who allow pedophiles into their groups (This is part of ANOTHER Tuskyn connection, since he is part of the raiders now as well.) He claimed Dogpatch Press was spreading misinformation by linking literal screenshots of Sotalo's own messages in an open group. He claimed that the convention failed because of him, and not the fact that they welcomed the Furry Raiders, a group that the fandom has long sense rejected for their hate, as well as one of them that brought Fox News into the convention the year prior against con-goers' consent being welcomed back. He was forced to defend the convention's image, and defend literal nazis by doing so. I do not use the term 'nazi' as an insult or lightly. This man still attacks dogpatch, as well as anyone who dares speak up against him or offer a means of him to act more mature. He also attacks anyone who questions his comments on wanting to marry/have sex with teenagers under 18. You will have a lot of people losing faith in your awards you select this man. And I will say once more... Why do you allow people to nominate themselves? It feels like it is done in bad faith. * * * Dear X: ​First of all, Sotalo did not nominate himself. I personally know the furry who nominated them. Sotalo did not know he was nominated until I told him. (Also, I never "allow" people to nominate themselves; it specifically says in the rules you cannot do that.) Another accusation I got from someone else was that the nomination was written by AI. It was not. If the grammar looks too good, it is because I clean up the text. I'm a professional editor. Thirdly, I have investigated the claims I have heard. I have also spoken with people I respect (including Rod O'Riley) who have defended Sotalo. I also know that the late great Mark Merlino believed that the museum was well done and just needed some additions. I have also spoken with Sotalo at length. I am satisfied by our long discussions that he in no way supports the FR or Nazis. How do I know? Because if you support the FR, you don't say, "Why would anyone support Nazis?" By the way, it is highly interesting to me that you yourself say you have not visited the VR Furry Museum, yet you are disparaging the contents of a museum you haven't even seen. Also, you assign guilt to Sotalo for apparently coming into contact with people who have come into contact with Tuskyn. By such logic, I'm guilty too, because I probably know someone in the fandom who knows someone who knows someone who knows Tuskyn. Also, you might not be aware, but the age of consent in 15 states in the USA is under 18. Many people feel it should be 16. So, if it is indeed Sotalo's position that the age of consent should be, say, 16, he is not alone and that doesn't make him a pedophile. ​​ What we have here in Sotalo is someone who is not adept at social situations. As Rod explained to me, Sotalo can has been known to behave in inappropriate and even aggressive ways that turn people off. But he is not a Nazi lover. I believe he is on the spectrum. People on the spectrum can have outbursts and be difficult to deal with (I have a grandson who is, so I know from personal experience.) People on the spectrum can also react frightfully bad to OTHER people on the spectrum for perceived bad behavior. For the last several years, I have also observed furries having knee-jerk reactions to what they believe to be a person associating with bad actors (either fascist or communist) and then proceeding to try and trash their reputations out of some ill-conceived, egotistical belief that it is their job to gatekeep the fandom. It is not. This is the same attitude that has made our society malignant with the likes of the Tea Baggers, MAGAts, and TERFs. You and others who have threatened to trash the reputation of the Good Furry Awards are behaving like gatekeepers. (Yes, you did. It was an implied threat.) The nominees are chosen by people in the fandom, not me. If you don't like the museum or have a personal beef with Sotalo, then don't vote for him. If nobody but one or two furries likes Sotalo, then that certainly means he will not win an award. I sincerely doubt you actually care about the reputation of the GFAs (or the fandom in general). I believe you and others are trying to weaponise the awards to alienate and disenfranchise people you personally do not like. I fully suspect that leaving Sotalo's nomination up will result in his haters launching a campaign against the GFAs. That's okay. I've dealt with behavior like this before in the fandom, and I am sure I will again. I've seen other people who are my friends get trashed too. Oh, and someone threatened to dox me once! Losing my Job, Trauma Stories, Being a Good Furry 5 days ago 7 min read By Sotalo Published: 5 days ago Well, it was a long time coming, almost 10 solid years with an employer who laid off 30% of staff previously and sees any stepback in growth as a reason to lay off employees. People in that environment harassed me for reasons beyond my control, and the amount of falsified investigations was absurd. I presented evidence proving otherwise and they didn't care. I do not recommend anyone come out as LGBTQ right now, or say they are a Furry, or even say they have a medical disability. It also becomes very difficult when knowledgable people in technical positions end up superceding the knowledge of their coworkers and contacts. Sometimes you can help people who don't help you back. Nobody likes someone who's young, experienced, intelligent, and disabled. The job market right now is insanely difficult. So many people are out of work thanks to the big, atrocious bill jacking tarriffs and decades of racing to the bottom. Many companies respond by either raising prices or issuing layoffs, anything in order to maintain their incredibly high profit margins. It will be a struggle to get back on my feet. My Type One Diabetes has caused me to fall over at blue collar jobs, and my inability to walk for long distances in shoes without my legs locking up severely limits the types of jobs I can obtain. Disability has been cut so much they refuse people who are wheelchair bound and need oxygen to live. I have friends who tried to find work for over a year to no avail, and others on Disability who have to suffer horrible conditions. For the longest time I served as a light to so many people, providing financial assistance when I could, showing kindness to minorities who had faced severe unkindness from others, raising communities where primary rule is respect, and it is fully ingrained in our culture. I teach the stories that are given to me from so many who are marginalized, including people who are only marginalized in this fandom. A Christian Furry with ADHD struggled to accept their sexuality and NSFW artwork. He'd suffered severe insomnia trying to avoid any thoughts of it to the point it was harming his health. I explained to him people with ADHD lack dopamine and need a safe, healthy means of gaining it. While medications continually cause side effects in so many people, the artwork does help, staving off depression, anxiety, and suicide. I told him Jesus preached forgiveness and knew nobody could live a sinless life. The horrible things people do to themselves and others in that pursuit was not His message. Perhaps his life was God's test for others' willingness to forgive, and a test for him to accept himself. As a former Christian I understood what to say. And it helps to have that experience growing up and hearing it from others. We are not alone as Furries on this Earth. But no story in my life came close to what I heard from real survivors of abuse... people who use Furry art as a means to cope with their experiences together with others who shared similar experiences. This community could've helped more people if the Fandom was more accepting of each other and less toxic. All the while the Good Furry Awards are running. Right now, you may cast your vote in 3 categories. I've been given a nomination for the Image Award. If you nominated me, I'd really like to speak with you. But also on the docket are people who raised hatred over Shymatsi, a pansexual African American community leader who organized Furry events in New Jersey and volunteered at dozens of Furry conventions for over 30 years. They raised hatred against some of our Fandom's greatest benefactors. It would be nice to receive the award for all the work done to preserve Sylys' memory and history in the museum, but as a result of my inclusion the award platform was eventually captured and used by my enemies to promote people that raised hate. I'm not sure if people did what they believed was righteous, that somehow our convention represented everything they hated, but it wasn't that. We showed the nominee for Best Short Film at Sundance, The Reality of Hope. The first Furry documentary ever accepted to the festival. We had awesome performers and dances. We had people presenting their favorite things, and a fun game room, and raised thousands for charity. People who inspire hate, issue death threats, and promote defamation do not deserve this honor. And it's wild to see people so ignorant of the truth, so malignant against the Fandom's (and each others') success, being honored in the same way. I'd spent thousands of hours gathering stories, research, and education on Furries to help people through this platform, and presented some of it in the Virtual Furry Museum. I asked for no money, only for people to be kind and respect one another. I fear the Furry Renaissance spawned by Zootopia is officially dead. Even now that people have the resources to learn more about this community, people are not always going to be interested to learn the truth about each other, and how this fandom helps so many across various communities, including ABDL, Furries with neurodivergence, and others. The forces of evil have grown so great in number and so powerful that all sense of respect for the preservation and growth of our community and culture is gone. Communities with hundreds or thousands of people get slashed and burned. The Furry Fandom, much like people's economic, emotional, and physical stability these days, are held together by tape and string. And there are far too many scissors. It becomes difficult to promote this fandom and the ways it helps people when the scissors have so much power. So many people are seeing instead the overwhelming toxicity as an insurmountable problem, making those communities and subcultures unable to operate effectively, and making so many people buy into the hate, giving it fuel and attention. So... where do we go from here? Recognize first and foremost that behind the username and every work of art is a living, breathing person, and an intention. Behind our conventions are staff filled with people who do not all think alike. And everyone who comes into this Fandom has clearly come in here for different reasons. They have their own history before finding Furry, and their own story through this Fandom, and how this Fandom was able to serve them. They bring their skills and knowledge here to either construct a space where they see a need, help others, or find a place in a world where so very often there isn't a place for us. Many people are worried. Many people are confused. Many people are scared. But this Fandom should not be a place for worry, confusion, or fear. It should be a place for people to come together. Paraphrasing someone wise who I spoke with tonight, there is no such thing as good or bad people, there are only choices. And the imbalance of information makes it very easy for everyone to assume their choice is good, but it's in truth very difficult to know for sure. I spent years researching Furries and still uncover more. I know one thing - raising hatred and mass campaigns against others is never good. Ask. Learn. Share compassion, empathy, kindness, and respect. Try your best to understand each other, because there may come a day I will not be able to do it for you. Many of my friends gathered to me upon hearing my job loss and offered sympathy and help. I'm going to do my best to come up with a plan to survive. Hopefully my next post will be more joyous. But though I have stood on the shoulders of giants, it is still tough to see through the weeds.
