Just a quick note to say that I am leaving @highpaycentre.bsky.social this week

Many fond memories of nearly 11 years(!) at HPC but narrating the the Liz Truss premiership was certainly a particuarly interesting time

Am moving to @shareaction.bsky.social to work in the UK policy team

The risk of attracting lesser people than the current crop of water industry executives seems tolerable for the benefit of sending a firm message about the public service ethos expected of public utility bosses & the limits to indulgence of executive entitlement

A missed opportunity!

Comments to the Guardian for a feature on the pay of infrastructure project leaders, which is very symbolic of the inequality that characterises the UK economy

Much talk of whether British CEOs should be paid more like Americans (median S&P 500 CEO pay about 4 x FTSE 100 equivalent)

Meanwhile, majority of American workers think their CEO is overpaid & couldn't last a week in a normal job

World inequality database suggests that over the same period, the share of UK pre-tax income captured by the top 1% increased from 7% to about 14%

So share of taxes paid by the 1% has increased, but a rise of 1.5 x their share of total incomes to just over 2x isn't that dramatic

UK increasingly a low wage, low welfare economy, with incomes outside the South East poorer than almost anywhere else in North West Europe - research from National Institute of Economic Research UK living standards review niesr.ac.uk/wp-content/u...

Another interesting insight from the HSBC report on attitudes to wealth. Income level considered wealthy in the North East is less than a third of that in London.

Thanks, makes sense - from a UK/Europe perspective, you'd almost prefer it if the tech cultists did represent mainstream opinion, and that these oddball ideas supplanting adminstrative competence as a govt priority reflected a cultural difference unlikely to be replicated.

Comparative bonus awards at Barclays a nice indicator of how the economy works and in whose interests:

For every £1,556 paid to investment bankers, an ordinary employee such as a bank cashier, call centre operative or administrative worker got a quid!

UK right blindly backs Trump & Netanyahu to ‘own the left’ without really caring about the consequences of their actions for the UK.

Was always obvious that displacing millions of people in the mid east would mean more pressure on Europe (inc UK) to accommodate refugees

interesting that the share of people in the US and Australia seeing economic inequality as a big problem is similar to Europe, but much more divided along left/right lines.

(also interesting that UK/Canada different to US/Aus in this respect)

Interesting that Vivek Ramaswamy thinks that people’s lives are shaped by external forces like ‘culture’ that go way beyond their individual control

Wonder if that has any implications for ‘libertarianism’ as a political philosophy…

UK has amongst the worst record for worker participation in business decisions in Europe - there are good grounds to think this worsens inequality and reduces economic productivity

new @highpaycentre.bsky.social report today setting out ways to strengthen workers' bargaining power & encourage a more participatory business culture better aligned with the interests of wider society.

This could boost pay & productivity & cut inequality, pre-tax
