The U.S. has been sending separated children back to Venezuela, following negotiations between both governments.

A few children are flown back each week, in deportation flights with adults.

But each week, more parents are also separated in the US as arrests here escalate.

ICE says it doesn't separate families, and offers parents the choice to be deported w/ children.

But since ICE is subjecting migrants to mandatory detention, it is dealing with a growing number of children split up from parents in detention or being deported.

Others said they were never given a choice, or were pressured/given misleading guidance by ICE.

Parents landed in ICE custody after being arrested by ICE or Border Patrol.

But many were transferred to ICE by local police in red states after traffic violations, etc.

Many parents we spoke to said that they were given a choice by ICE to deport w/ their children.

But many said they were told they would have to wait for months in detention if so.

Many ultimately chose to leave w/o children, hoping to facilitate their return from Venezuela.

I teamed up with Julie Turkewitz and Isayen Herrera, in Colombia and Venezuela, to explore what's happening.

We interviewed more than a dozen families in Venezuela, including recently deported parents, and reviewed police records, immigration case files, and court documents.

It's unclear how many immigrants like Alejandro are "erroneously removed" by ICE, because the agency hasn't tracked such cases in the past.

Critics warn that the missteps in his case could foreshadow the types of mistakes that could become more frequent as detentions ramp up.

Alejandro worked for many years at a Trump Golf Club, was married, and had four children who are US citizens, including a son in the Marines.

In a rare acknowledgement, ICE admitted it had mistakenly expelled him without seeing a judge.

The raids came not long after some pro-Trump influencers posted videos on social media about the illegal vending that has gone on Canal Street for years.

News of the raid spread quickly, leading protesters to show up and chase some of the federal agents down Lafayette Street as they traveled to the ICE offices at 26 Federal Plaza.

More federal agents showed up in tactical gear, along with an armored vehicle, leading to a chaotic scene.
