The final section of Debs' statement to the court prior to sentencing at his trial for delivering an anti-war speech in Canton Ohio. It reads: "Your Honor, I ask no mercy and I plead for no immunity. I realize that finally the right must prevail. I never so clearly comprehended as now the great struggle between the powers of greed and exploitation on the one hand and upon the other the rising hosts of industrial freedom and social justice. I can see the dawn of the better day for humanity. The people are awakening. In due time they will and must come to their own. When the mariner, sailing over tropic seas, looks for relief from his weary watch, he turns his eyes toward the southern cross, burning luridly above the tempest-vexed ocean. Going through some new #NCGA legislation this morning and this jumped out at me
description of a section of proposed legislation in the North Carolina General Assembly that reads "ZONING REGULATIONS/UNIVERSITY PROPERTY G.S. 160D-913 exempts from local government zoning and development regulations any building project located in Wake County that is managed by the State Construction Office. Section 18 would exempt on a Statewide basis any building project managed by the State Construction Office from local zoning and development regulations. This section would also exempt projects that are both: (i) managed by The University of North Carolina or any of its constituent institutions, and (ii) are in Buncombe, Orange, or Wake County."

Trans youth and allies in the hallway of the Legislative Office Building, Raleigh North Carolina, March 23, 2016 I took this photo after attending the brief committee hearing for House Bill 2. I was sitting not far from Congresswoman Val Foushee then a state senator when she asked for a half-hour delay to read the bill. The chairman said he’d give her 5 minutes. The testimony of several exceptionally brave young people who stood in the face of such hatred is burned in my memory as is the contempt they were shown by legislators. A few weeks before at a press conference I’d asked the House Speaker, who is also now in congress, if the hard right social agenda of the previous year would continue. He said probably not as they’d achieved their goals. He lied. The bill was passed in a few hours and signed by Gov Pat McCrory. It was far more than the bathroom provisions which made it notorious. Among other things, it took away the rights of all North Carolinians to sue in state courts over discrimination, a provision demanded by business interests in order for them to back the bill. I still get that same feeling in the pit of my stomach when I recall that one day session from hell. The state paid dearly for their legislature’s betrayal, none more so than the young people gathered in that hallway. North Carolina doesn’t have ballot initiatives available to the public, only through its heavily and illegally gerrymandered legislature. With no recourse but an arduous journey through the courts, those young people and their allies took their message and their fight to the streets. It’s the only tool we have here. Today, as even worse anti-trans legislation is moving through those same halls, that harsh truth remains. We had to fight then, we have to fight now and we’ll have to fight tomorrow to stop the forces of hate and oppression in our midst. Protect Trans Kids. No surrender.
