My 16yo is often to be found sleeping wherever she collapses and usually in the most inconvenient of places, driving her siblings mad as they have to step over her.

Having said that, I've just read up in a bit more detail and the changes to the SPaG sound positive- hopefully less teaching to the test required, giving more time to focus on teaching writing.

I was really hoping for an overhaul of the primary curriculum. And really, why just tweak the SPaG test? I hoped they'd scrap it- it's the biggest waste of time.

Absolutely. I have Y5s/6s who read novels but have gaps in decoding skills and still struggle with some unknown words, especially children with limited vocabulary. They would benefit with practice reading books such as the first even though it's way before their "level." There are so many variables!

This has made me think that a problem with levelled readers is that they treat progression in reading as linear when in fact it is necessary to treat every reader as an individual whose strengths and areas of difficulty in reading will vary.

Thanks! It's interesting to look closely at specific examples. Each book would serve a different purpose, I think. 2 for a child who is building fluency whereas 1 is clearly written for decoding practice as it is so stilted- more suited for a child who guesses words/struggles with unusual words.

My son has just started secondary so gone from a small primary where they knew him so well to daily masking which means he's doing ok at school but when home a very different matter. Sending strength and I hope you find some enjoyment and relaxation this half-term.
