I’m in a Badedas bath with codeine, wine and Ben Machell. Friday night starts (and likely ends) here, lads.

A year ago this week, the church’s night watch guarded the graveyard on my bedtime walk. It flew up from behind a headstone, nearly gave me a heart attack, then stared at me from this gargoyle while I stared back. Unforgettable.

He wasn’t at college with us. Spiders/bands crowd. Not sure whose party this was, with Andy (Scorch) in drag and Linny in camo, circa 1993!

This is one of my favourite books, if you enjoyed reading about Cornell you’d like this.

Poor Keith, I feel cruel laughing so much at this description of him. And finding Giles’s “…and one gin” so funny.

Snap, this is my original copy from way back when.

My friend got me a signed first edition of Dead Babies for my birthday. I cried. Was welded to it in my teens/twenties — revisiting it, some bits were wince-inducing but he really was one of the best prose stylists ever in my book (and his).

That looks and sounds remarkably like an elephant hawk moth caterpillar! Please note: I did not whack this one with a stick, even though it gave me quite the shock.

I’ve knackered my wrist so no work today… instead, I am sunbathing, reading and writing (the latter is even more illegible than usual). “Relaxation aids” may have been ingested, including some wild painkillers. Get in.

I do like (this) Monday.

You are correct. They can go to the right of these three haunted shelves…

Great turnout for East Yorkshire Thoroughbreds car show today at Fort Paull. All the owners and visitors were a pleasure to host. And it didn't rain!

In the unlikely event that you’re in Holderness, my article on Hedon’s Magdalen Fair is in the Gazette this week. Giants! Badger-baiting! Glammed-up pugs dancing with bears! Pickpockets! You don’t get that at Hull Fair (apart from the pickpockets).

RB Straker, purveyor of pop.
RB’s factory was on Leonard Street in Hull, late 19th/early 20th C. Some plough lad would’ve sat by this ditch with his bottle of ginger beer 100 years ago before chucking it for me to find. Litterbug.

Lovely long walk tonight across the fields. My favourite spot for the arable version of mudlarking — these bits came from the side of a ditch. Nice bottle (sadly broken). Came home with a bagful, just need to wash it all now.

With these ‘zines you are really spoiling us!
But which shelf… with the serial killers or with the ghosts?

Two new books from the amazing Wrecking Ball shop in Hull. Hunter S to read in the bath, Hodge to read in bed. Both fantastic so far.

Found this in my photos earlier. I posted it on Twitter years ago but thought the Male deserved another outing. It’s Amy Johnson’s plane… A WOMAN! A WOMAN PILOT! Disgusting.

Two beautiful elephant hawk moth caterpillars that scared the hell out of me in a client’s garden today. They nearly met a sticky (ugh) end under my boot, but no fear: I rescued them and put them somewhere safe. A reminder to weed mindfully!
