Paris stands with the Stand Up For Science movement! No democracy without academic freedom. It starts with attacks on “wokism” or “islamo-gauchisme”—but the real target is liberal democracy itself. Time to push back ☀️@standupforscifr.bsky.social

The top 1% global wealth share could rise from 38.5% today to 46% in 2050 if the wealthiest entirely own the new low-carbon infrastructure. Conversely, if this is financed by a tax on the top 1% and then owned by governments or not-for-profits, the top 1% wealth share could drop to 26%.

Richest countries tend to have the highest public spending: around 40% public spending in the 20% richest countries, vs. <20% in the 20% poorest countries.

The world's poorest countries spend little on public services, and much on public debt payments. About 50% of public revenues are spent on interest payments in Egypt or Ghana, for instance.

The world's 10 poorest countries as per our latest data (starting with Burundi, Yemen, Dominican Republic) are global debtors. Net foreign wealth in these countries typically amounts to around -50 to -100% of their Net Domestic Product.

Despite having negative net wealth positions (i.e. foreigners own more wealth in the US than Americans own wealth abroad), US or France still have positive net foreign incomes, receiving more income from the rest of the world than they send income to other countries.

The world's richest economies in per capita income terms are Monaco, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Most of the world's top 10 richest economies are tax havens.

All world regions have recovered from the Covid blip in 2020, except for Sub-Saharan Africa.

South Africa, Namibia and Colombia stand out as the most unequal countries as per the share of national income accruing to the top 10% (before taxes).

Regions that have relatively less income inequality are also among the world's richest regions. In Europe, the bottom 50% makes nearly 20% of total pretax national income, vs. less than 10% in the world's most unequal regions (i.e. Latin America, Middle East North Africa).

Let us start with the latest average income data. In North America per capita incomes are circa €3550/month; Europe: €2700/month, East Asia: 1350€/month, Sub-Saharan Africa: 250€/month. Values in Purchasing Power Parity.
