Here’s another wonderfully designed record label that resonated with me as a kid (pilfered from my older sister’s collection).

The sun, roots and new growth filled that little farm girl with such joy! 🎧
You are looking at a 7” single for the song “Indiana Wants Me” by R. Dean Taylor. The label is reddish orange. From the center hole grows a tangle of green roots. To the left, the roots are sprouting into twigs. Slightly right of center is a thick green shoot burgeoning into something tree-like. The sun is visible beyond the tree, with yellow ripples arching out from the sides. The words “RARE EARTH” bloom from the top of the tree. The font and art are reminiscent of ‘60s counter culture artists Gilbert Shelton and Robert Crumb.

My earliest childhood memories revolve around record labels. I gravitated toward the visual aspects because I hadn’t yet learned to read. This was my favorite label (snaffled from my older sister’s collection). 🎧😻
You are looking at a 7” single for the song “Cool Aid / Detroit” by Paul Humphrey & His Cool Aid Chemists. The label is red, with a cartoon black cat sitting “catloaf” style at the top. Inside the cat’s midsection is the word “LIZARD.” Lizard Records was a short-lived independent label based in Los Angeles, founded by producer Gabriel Mekler. Only active from 1969-1971, it released some excellent, groovy funk.

This is a photo of a 7” vinyl single by short-lived Seattle-based Sub Pop band Blood Circus. The A Side is “Two Way Street.” The single is housed in a blood red die-cut sleeve with the label visible. The label is white with a B&W saturated photo of a person with long hair and round sunglasses. A black cat, almost unnoticed within the person’s dark shirt, peeks up with big eyes and perky ears from the bottom of the label.

Vinyl cataloging continues with two of my favorites words: Free Kitten. (Band is aces, too)😻🎧
This is a 7” vinyl picture disc from American noise rock band Free Kitten, originally formed by Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Julie Cafritz (Pussy Galore) and Yoshimi (Boredoms). The vinyl is hot pink with a photo of a Japanese woman wearing dominatrix-style leather dress, gloves and boots. The band name floats to the right of the dominatrix, and beneath is a drawing of a white cat face, whose nose is an anarchy symbol. Beneath the cat is the song title “Oh Bondage, Up Yours!” (A cover version of the X-Ray Spex tune)

IP005/6/7 LP 999806 Made in USA. 2 LP set w/bonus 7” from LA’s now-defunct Human Hands. Various live, demo and rehearsal tapes (all previously unreleased versions) from the band that spawned Dream Syndicate’s Dennis Duck!”

This is the inner sleeve of a vinyl record of comedian Steve Martin’s 1978 album “Wild and Crazy Guy.” The sleeve is a black and white photo of Martin holding a striped tabby chonker. Martin smiles adoringly at the kitty, who stares at the camera looking very satisfied with the attention.

Cataloging my vinyl and revisiting the BEST label photo. 😻
This is a photo of the vinyl 12” single “A Person Isn’t Safe Anywhere These Days” by The Chameleons, released on Statik Records in 1983. For the first seven years, our cat favored my husband’s lap. But after my first chemo treatment, she hopped onto my lap and has been a comfort throughout it all.
