My colleagues have done some excellent work! I shall have to talk about some other thoughts thought that have occurred to me and hope that they're sufficient. I plan on locking the door so no-one can escape until I'm done waffling.

I have nothing to brag about, so I'll have to talk about something else!

One of my favourite questions to ask people is: how many macro systems does Rust have? My answer has, so far, matched almost no-one else's! [One day I should go back and write up my general opinions on macros. They've been stewing for 15 years since anything I wrote about anything Converge-related.]

I agree, and I think quite a bit more work would need to happen for this stuff to become a reality. I wasn't able, back then, to convince folks with funding that this reality was achievable, so we moved onto other areas. It's still something I care a lot about!

I'm impressed people remember that stuff! If someone is going to do a PhD on this stuff, I do think a CS PhD might be better than, say, trying to do it as a PhD in interpretative dance ;)

For those of you in Singapore, Jake is at SPLASH and presenting the paper on Saturday. He's friendly, and on the job market -- please find him and say hello!

Good news -- not only can a nice design be found, but some of Rust's properties mean we can solve classical GC finalization problems! soft-dev.org/pubs/html/hu...

Indeed, that's probably even more common in web/email than `null`, at least in my experience!

There was a referendum on changing the voting system in 2011, so the precedent has been established that any similar change will need to take the same route. That changes the calculus somewhat.
