I don't remember it being called an RPG in common parlance, but the OP in that thread was providing examples of it being used even in English magazine, so it's evidence that it was.

Touhou I get, there has been Super Robot Wars + Touhou fangames before, but it's not just Touhou. Atranger is a '70s toy that seems to be known for not having an anime, it's cameod in some otaku stuff like Geppy-X.
