The true answer is, a little of both. You influence your writing, and it influences you back. Repeat until you are happy with the results. Hope that you can convince a publisher that it is in an established genre (or two). "No, really, it's an urban fantasy western sci-fi romance."

I enjoyed this one, our protagonist is an interesting character, she listens to the wind, and when it blows, she goes. This time it lands her in some serious trouble.

I think part of the problem with winningest is that it usually feels like present tense. Wonenest perhaps? (Broke -> broken -> brokenest; Won -> wonen -> wonenest) Maybe you just can't win English is fun!
