It's Ryder Cup heritage

The evidence is we can win difficult games (Bilbao) with that midfield. The problem is not the players selected, but his message and how he asks them to play. There could be a lot more movement to progress the ball and attack the box from them. Risky, but he has to trust the quality of defence.

Madeuke pulled a good ball to the edge of the box and none of the 3 central midfielders were within 20 yards of that space.

Rice or Zubi should be encouraged to move up field between the lines to aid ball progression. There's enough defensive excellence there to deal with most situations if caught up field. Same with runs into the box from midfield - compare it to Liverpool.

I think the starting eleven was fine, it's the mindset / gameplan Arteta sends them out with that limits. Too many times in the 1st half and in other games, while in possession we have 5 (6 if you include Raya) in build-up.

Any chance of an IR?

They were very impressive, but I think the early goal buoyed their confidence and dented ours. Our press seemed hesitant. Once we built back into the game, their level dropped. That said their mid block 2nd half was worringly good. We've got to attack faster 2nd leg.

Very true and when it's a consistent problem it can't be on the players. Our attacking approach is risk averse, despite a solid defence that should allow more risks.

City's defending is performance art 🤌

All the clicks/content etc that these unnecessary referee controversy's produce is another revenue stream.

Agree with everything you've said Tim. I have a growing belief that the Premier League is complicit. In my opinion, they have the power to push (very hard) for PGMOL to change. It doesn't suit them, or more specifically their main customers, Sky and BT. These are not non-profits.

Where are the non-feature walls? I don’t know how you would be able to fall asleep in any of those bedrooms

I think it’s beyond incompetence that they could not look at this beyond one or 2 replays and also reason that out if they aren’t quite sure where it hit.

I accept it happens very quickly but the way he turns his body and ball loops makes it clear that it could have only hit his left hip. If it hit his right forearm it would have taken the pace off the ball rather than looping it over the keeper.

Feels like a bit of a "trap game". Hope we can crack their defensive solidity with creating repeated chances to wear them down. Will take a 1-0

From minute one that's been his best performance in a long time. Goals will come with more confidence from playing well. Good to see him on the defenders shoulder to threaten the back line and coming towarss the ball centrally to link up

I agree. Keep as many players in their best positions. Wonder about Rice at left back, and getting trossard to left 8 with Martinelli outside him. If we need more creativity and goal threat Leo closer to the box would help, I think.
