True, I was assuming a competition in which we have competitive parties that have established their brands as Kind and Turnaway, and a party that is looking to position themselves in the middle as Horrible

And, of course, the rhetoric and policies designed to chase that middle group just serve to legitimise the views of the nastier group, so you're squeezing out the target voters as you try to grab hold of them

I can only assume that, like Millionaire Prince email scams, they do this because it works on a large enough minority to be worthwhile. Maybe it turns out that human wants are essentially unfathomable and the best their algorithms can do is "The kettle you just bought is probably no good, try again"
