I don't know how, but somehow I managed to get into a pick-up session and took control of a robot in Beijing in a boxing match. I got to knock out my opponent. This may be the most Bay Area Friday night activity I've ever done.

A lifeless alien planet orbiting a G-type dwarf.
We land, set up camp to survey.
On the fifth day Ellison finds what he swears is fiber optic cable and patches us in.
Ecstatic machine hosannas without end.
Our ship computer short-circuits in joy, stranding us
as the seething planet
comes alive.

Good times catching up with people today at GDC! If you see someone like this on Friday it is me and say hello, or it is my doppelgänger and you should say olleh

Well this should be interesting...I've got about 16 large pots of bamboo I've been propagating since around 2014, and soon it will be time to say goodbye. Black bamboo lives 40-120 years...it dies after flowering and goes through a "mass flowering" event where all clones off the rhizome synchronize.

This is an incredible, insightful piece of writing around labor in academia.

If anyone knows of a predatory publisher that puts a clause in their author contracts giving them the option to complete the contracted work using AI in the event of the author’s death please let me know I love to watch my dystopias come to life

Every time I hear about new simulated chatbots of dead authors I remember this page from Ice-Bound…if you’d asked me ten years ago if I thought we’d be here in ten years I’d have laughed, then cried.

The Wikipedia for this film is one of the most thorough I’ve ever seen. That particular scene has such a wild production story: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorcerer_(film)

Reading about UFOs in the 1800s and it’s so interesting how some things never change (still waiting for more lk-99 developments to sate my need for scientific entertainment)
