Those recordings are also important because when local and state officials say things like “we couldn’t have seen this coming,” oral histories can show a sort of testimony from the past.

As Secor shows us, as unfathomable as the recent tragedies along the Guadalupe River are, there’s a precedent.

When Secor’s father later took over the business, he said he remembers in 1959 when one new-to-town woman tried to build a cabin along the river nearby. His father warned her not to, he said. Yet the woman didn’t listen:
